CD Projekt Red, the developer of Cyberpunk 2077, reported on social media that the company fell a victim of ransomware.

According CD Projekt Red representative, some devices on the company’s network were encrypted, but the backups remained intact. CD Projekt Red has already secured IT infrastructure and started data recovery.

The company also released a note from ransomware operators that are claiming to have stolen the source code for Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3 (including the unreleased version) and Gwent, as well as financial, legal, administrative and HR documentation.

We have also dumped all of your documents relating to accounting, administration legal, HR, investor relations and more! “If we will not come to an agreement, then your source codes will be sold or leaked online and your documents will be sent to our contacts in gaming journalism.says the note, giving a deadline of 48 hours.

CD Projekt Red writes that it does not intend to negotiate with criminals and pay them a ransom, realizing that in the end the compromised data may still be disclosed.

We are still investigating the incident, but at currently we can confirm that, according to our information, the compromised systems did not contain any personal data of our players or users of our services.the company emphasizes.

In recent years, this is the third incident associated with a ransomware attack on large gaming companies. So, last year, at the hands of Ragnar Locker and Egregor ransomware operators fall such industry giants as Ubisoft and Crytek also suffered.

This will be frustrating for users of the game, but as consumers are generally very sympathetic when something like this happens. Fixes and updates for Cyberpunk 2077 may take a backseat for a while, as mitigating the effects of the ransomware attack becomes the priority.said for BBC Louise Shorthouse, senior gaming analyst at Ampere Analysis.

Also, according to BBC journalists, while rather large companies secretly pay criminals huge ransoms, CD Projekt Red has shown what can and, according to many information security experts, will be done to solve the growing problem of ransomware.

Let me also remind you that I recently wrote that The ransomware masked itself as a beta version of Cyberpunk 2077 for Android.
