The Attackuk virus falls within the ransomware type of infection. It belongs to the MedusaLocker ransomware family. Harmful software of this type encrypts all user’s data on the computer (photos, text files, excel tables, audio files, videos, etc) and adds its specific extension to every file, creating the How_to_back_files.html text files in each directory containing encrypted files.
What is Attackuk virus?
☝️ A strictly accurate denomination for the Attackuk is “a ransomware infection”.
Attackuk adds its specific .attackuk extension to the title of each encoded file. For instance, an image entitled “photo.jpg” will be turned into “photo.jpg.attackuk”. Just like the Excel table named “table.xlsx” will be renamed to “table.xlsx.attackuk”, and so forth.
In every directory that contains the encrypted files, a How_to_back_files.html text document will be created. It is a ransom money note. It contains information on the ways of paying the ransom and some other remarks. The ransom note usually contains instructions on how to purchase the decryption tool from the tamperers. That is it.

How did Attackuk ransomware end up on my PC?
There are many possible ways of ransomware infiltration.
Nowadays, there are three most popular ways for malefactors to have ransomware planted in your system. These are email spam, Trojan injection and peer-to-peer networks.
If you access your mailbox and see letters that look just like notifications from utility services providers, delivery agencies like FedEx, Internet providers, and whatnot, but whose addresser is unknown to you, be wary of opening those emails. They are most likely to have a malicious file attached to them. So it is even more dangerous to download any attachments that come with letters like these.
Another thing the hackers might try is a Trojan virus model. A Trojan is a program that gets into your computer pretending to be something else. For instance, you download an installer for some program you want or an update for some software. But what is unpacked turns out to be a harmful program that encrypts your data. As the update file can have any name and any icon, you have to make sure that you can trust the resource of the stuff you’re downloading. The optimal way is to trust the software companies’ official websites.
As for the peer-to-peer file transfer protocols like torrents or eMule, the threat is that they are even more trust-based than the rest of the Web. You can never guess what you download until you get it. So you’d better be using trustworthy resources. Also, it is a good idea to scan the folder containing the downloaded objects with the antivirus as soon as the downloading is done.
How to remove the Attackuk virus?
It is crucial to note that besides encrypting your data, the Attackuk virus will probably install Vidar Stealer on your PC to seize your credentials to various accounts (including cryptocurrency wallets). That program can derive your logins and passwords from your browser’s auto-filling cardfile.
Often racketeers would decode some of your files to prove that they really have the decryption program. As Attackuk virus is a relatively recent ransomware, anti-malware developers have not yet found a way to undo its work. However, the decryption tools are constantly updated, so the effective countermeasure may soon arrive.
Of course, if the tamperers succeed in encrypting victim’s essential data, the hopeless person will most likely comply with their demands. Nevertheless, paying to racketeers gives no guarantee that you’re getting your data back. It is still risky. After getting the money, the racketeers may send a wrong decryption key to the victim. There were reports about hackers simply disappearing after getting the ransom without even bothering to reply.
The optimal safety measure against ransomware is to have a system restore point or the copies of your essential files in the cloud drive or at least on an external storage. Obviously, that might be not enough. Your most crucial thing could be that file you were working upon when it all went down. But at least it is something. It is also advisable to scan your drives with the anti-malware utility after the OS is rolled back.
There are other ransomware products, besides Attackuk, that work similarly. Examples of those are Nifr, Boty, Niwm, and some others. The two main differences between them and the Attackuk are the ransom amount and the method of encryption. The rest is almost identical: documents become inaccessible, their extensions altered, ransom notes are found in every folder containing encrypted files.
Some lucky victims were able to decrypt the blocked files with the help of the free tools provided by anti-malware specialists. Sometimes the hackers mistakenly send the decryption key to the wronged in the ransom readme. Such an extraordinary fail allows the user to restore the files. But naturally, one should never rely on such a chance. Remember, ransomware is a bandits’ instrument to lay their hands on the money of their victims.
How do I avoid ransomware injection?
Attackuk ransomware doesn’t have a superpower, neither does any similar malware.
You can protect yourself from ransomware infiltration within three easy steps:
- Never open any emails from unknown mailers with strange addresses, or with content that has likely no connection to something you are waiting for (how can you win in a money prize draw without even taking part in it?). If the email subject is likely something you are waiting for, scrutinize all elements of the dubious letter carefully. A fake letter will always contain a mistake.
- Never use cracked or unknown programs. Trojan viruses are often distributed as a part of cracked products, possibly under the guise of “patch” preventing the license check. Understandably, dubious programs are very hard to tell from trustworthy ones, because trojans sometimes have the functionality you need. You can try searching for information on this software product on the anti-malware message boards, but the optimal solution is not to use such software.
- And to be sure about the safety of the objects you downloaded, check them with GridinSoft Anti-Malware. This software will be a powerful shield for your system.

FAQ
🤔 How can I open “.attackuk” files? Are the “.attackuk” files accessible?
There’s no way to do it, unless the files “.attackuk” files are decrypted.
🤔 What should I do to make my files accessible as fast as possible?
Hopefully, you have made a copy of those important files. Otherwise, you might try to employ System Restore. The only question is whether you have saved any Restore Points that would be helpful now. All other solutions require time.
🤔 Will GridinSoft Anti-Malware remove all the encrypted files alongside the Attackuk virus?
No way! Unlike the ransomware program itself, the encrypted files do not jeopardize your system.
GridinSoft Anti-Malware will remove active threats from your PC. The malware that has attacked your system is probably still functional and it scans your system every so often to arrest any new files you might create on your computer after the attack. As it has been said above, the Attackuk malware does not come alone. It installs backdoors and keyloggers that can take your account passwords by trespass and provide malefactors with easy access to your computer in the future.
🤔 What to do if the Attackuk ransomware has blocked my computer and I can’t get the activation code.
In such a case, you need to have a flash memory card with a previously installed Trojan Killer. Use Safe Mode to execute the procedure. You see, the ransomware starts automatically as the system launches and encrypts any new files created or brought into your machine. To suppress this function – use Safe Mode, which allows only the vital applications to run automatically. Consider reading our manual on booting Windows in Safe Mode.
🤔 What can I do right now?
Many of the blocked files might still be at your disposal
- If you sent or received your critical files through email, you could still download them from your online mailbox.
- You might have shared images or videos with your friends or relatives. Just ask them to send those images back to you.
- If you have initially got any of your files from the Web, you can try doing it again.
- Your messengers, social media pages, and cloud storage might have all those files too.
- It might be that you still have the needed files on your old computer, a notebook, cellphone, memory stick, etc.
USEFUL TIP: You can use data recovery programs3 to retrieve your lost information since ransomware blocks the copies of your files, deleting the authentic ones. In the video below, you can learn how to use PhotoRec for such a restoration, but be advised: you can do it only after you eradicate the ransomware itself with an antivirus program.
