RKHWHROGQ Virus 🔐 (.RKHWHROGQ Files) — How to Remove?

Written by Brendan Smith
The Rkhwhrogq virus belongs under the Snatch ransomware family. Ransomware of such sort encrypts all user’s data on the computer (images, text files, excel sheets, music, videos, etc) and appends its own extension to every file, leaving the HOW TO RESTORE YOUR FILES.TXT files in each folder which contains the encrypted files.

Rkhwhrogq virus: what is known so far?

☝️ A scientifically accurate description for the Rkhwhrogq would be “a Snatch family ransomware-type infection”.

Rkhwhrogq adds its extra .rkhwhrogq extension to every file’s name. For example, an image named “photo.jpg” will be turned into “photo.jpg.rkhwhrogq”. Just like the Excel sheet named “table.xlsx” will become “table.xlsx.rkhwhrogq”, and so on.

In each directory that contains the encoded files, a HOW TO RESTORE YOUR FILES.TXT text file will appear. It is a ransom money memo. It contains information about the ways of contacting the racketeers and some other information. The ransom note usually contains a description of how to buy the decryption tool from the tamperers. That is how they do it.

How did my computer get infected with Rkhwhrogq ransomware?

There is a huge number of possible ways of ransomware injection.

There are currently three most popular ways for evil-doers to have the Rkhwhrogq virus working in your digital environment. These are email spam, Trojan injection and peer file transfer.

If you open your mailbox and see letters that look like familiar notifications from utility services companies, postal agencies like FedEx, Internet providers, and whatnot, but whose “from” field is strange to you, be wary of opening those letters. They are very likely to have a viral item attached to them. So it is even more dangerous to download any attachments that come with letters like these.

Another option for ransom hunters is a Trojan horse model2. A Trojan is an object that infiltrates into your machine disguised as something different. For example, you download an installer for some program you want or an update for some software. However, what is unboxed turns out to be a harmful agent that corrupts your data. Since the update file can have any name and any icon, you’d better be sure that you can trust the resource of the stuff you’re downloading. The optimal thing is to trust the software developers’ official websites.

As for the peer file transfer protocols like torrent trackers or eMule, the threat is that they are even more trust-based than the rest of the Web. You can never guess what you download until you get it. Our suggestion is that you use trustworthy websites. Also, it is a good idea to scan the directory containing the downloaded items with the anti-malware utility as soon as the downloading is done.

How do I get rid of the Rkhwhrogq virus?

It is important to inform you that besides encrypting your files, the Rkhwhrogq virus will most likely install the Azorult Spyware on your PC to get access to credentials to various accounts (including cryptocurrency wallets). That program can derive your credentials from your browser’s auto-filling cardfile.

Sometimes tamperers would decode few of your files so you know that they really have the decryption program. Since Rkhwhrogq virus is a relatively recent ransomware, security software developers have not yet found a way to reverse its work. Nevertheless, the anti-ransomware tools are frequently upgraded, so the effective countermeasure may soon be available.

Sure thing, if the evildoers do the job of encrypting someone’s essential files, the desperate person will most likely fulfill their demands. However, paying a ransom does not necessarily mean that you’re getting your data back. It is still risky. After obtaining the ransom, the racketeers may send a wrong decryption key to the victim. There were reports of ransomware developers just disappearing after getting the money without even writing back.

The optimal countermeasure to ransomware is to have a system restore point or the copies of your essential files in the cloud disk or at least on an external disk. Of course, that might be not enough. The most important thing could be that file you were working on when it all started. Nevertheless, it is something. It is also reasonable to scan your drives with the antivirus program after the OS is rolled back.

There are other ransomware products, besides Rkhwhrogq, that work similarly. For instance, Vvwq, Oori, Ooxa, and some others. The two main differences between them and the Rkhwhrogq are the ransom amount and the method of encryption. The rest is the same: files become encoded, their extensions altered, ransom notes are created in each directory containing encoded files.

Some lucky victims were able to decode the blocked files with the aid of the free tools provided by anti-malware developers. Sometimes the hackers accidentally send the decryption code to the victims in the ransom note. Such an extraordinary fail allows the user to restore the files. But obviously, one should never expect such a chance. Remember, ransomware is a bandits’ tool to lay their hands on the money of their victims.

How сan I avert ransomware infiltration?

Rkhwhrogq ransomware has no endless power, so as any similar malware.

You can defend your PC from its attack taking several easy steps:

  • Ignore any emails from unknown senders with strange addresses, or with content that has likely no connection to something you are waiting for (can you win in a money prize draw without participating in it?). In case the email subject is more or less something you are expecting, scrutinize all elements of the questionable email with caution. A hoax email will surely have a mistake.
  • Do not use cracked or unknown software. Trojan viruses are often spreaded as a part of cracked products, possibly as a “patch” preventing the license check. Understandably, dubious programs are difficult to tell from reliable software, because trojans may also have the functionality you need. Try searching for information on this software product on the anti-malware message boards, but the best solution is not to use such programs at all.
  • And to be sure about the safety of the objects you downloaded, use GridinSoft Anti-Malware. This software will be a perfect shield for your personal computer.

  • Your messengers, social networks pages, and cloud storage might have all those files too.
  • It might be that you still have the needed files on your old PC, a notebook, mobile, flash memory, etc.

USEFUL TIP: You can employ file recovery utilities5 to retrieve your lost information since ransomware encodes the copies of your files, deleting the authentic ones. In the tutorial below, you can learn how to recover your files with PhotoRec, but remember: you can do it only after you eradicate the ransomware itself with an anti-malware program.

Also, you can contact the following governmental fraud and scam sites to report this attack:

To report the attack, you can contact local executive boards. For instance, if you live in USA, you can have a talk with FBI Local field office, IC3 or Secret Service.
