What are pop-ups? popups are a result of adware presence. Adware is malware that shows you the pay-per-view of pay-per-click advertisements, which generates significant revenue for adware representatives. These promotions might consist of exact composition or have a web link to harmful content/website because adware maintainers have no reason to check the content’s goodness. They will show their solitary target is cash. push notification push notification.

Pop-up advertising itself is an excellent, affordable and extremely productive marketing solution1 It makes it possible for the vendor to link the buyers’ interest to their site and the customers to get dynamic updates on the goods they wish to buy. So, when the customer gets a pop-up notification that the online store they checked out earlier sells a TV set he wishes to purchase with a 15% price cut, he possibly buys it. Considering the minimal cost for the popups and their targeting, this marketing method is a favorite thing among the advertising departments big online sellers.

However, virus creators could not miss such a rewarding strategy. The potential to show the popup advertisements forcibly to the people of malware invasion is an excellent basis for evil-minded manipulations with the popup promotions. Unfortunately, advertisements are among hundreds that are “employed” in this system.

How have I got the virus?

Several methods of becoming infected by the adware result in the popups tornado. A lion’s part of this virus instance is after the freeware or cracked programs distributed on the peering networks. You can also download free software from the main site, and get adware as a legit bundled program.

However, there is no need to blame yourself. Many people frequently use unreliable programs from untrusted sources: abandonware, various free tools, and even hacked programs. These applications are risky because it is quite easy to include a malware under the guise of part of the license hacking script or as a part of the self-made algorithm inside the Windows optimization tool.

The promotion on the unusual website can also be concealed popup virus. Such web pages are, in most cases, filled with intense and blinking ads, and their owners often approve any promotions to post on their web page. Hence, clicking such banners is risky: only the advertisement provider realizes what will happen when you press this ad. Besides some “light” viruses, like adware or undesirable programs, you may also receive something much more threatening, like ransomware or coin miner; the substantial share of coin miners distribution is exactly after the malicious advertisements.

The statistic shows that people dislike popup advertising more than other types of promotions

How can I get rid of pop-up advertisements?

The manual of adware elimination consists of 2 sections. First, we need to get rid of the malware and correct the effects of its activity. The elimination task is pretty simple because you can do it even using Microsoft Defender – security tool that is available on all personal computers with Windows 8/10. Nevertheless, because of its substantial resource consumption and some errors that can be pivotal for some users, Defender is often turned off by the users, so its usage is probably impossible. Moreover, a wide range of trojan viruses can disable the embedded antivirus. It is far better to use a separate program that will not have such weaknesses.

I would certainly advise you to utilize Gridinsoft Anti-Malware2. This well-proven anti-malware tool will undoubtedly exterminate the viruses from your system and create an invulnerable shield with a Proactive protection feature. But let’s manage adware first.

After resetting web browsers, you must ensure that your browser will be connected to the accurate DNS while connecting to the site you need. Make a text file titled “hosts” on your computer’s desktop, after that open it and fill it with the following lines3:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to hostnames. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column, followed by the corresponding hostname.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
# For example:
# # source server
# # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# localhost
# ::1 localhost

Find the hosts.txt file in C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc directory. Rename this file to “hosts.old.txt” (to distinguish it from the new one), and then move the file you created on the desktop to this folder. Remove the hosts.old from this folder. Now you have your hosts file as good as new.

Nonetheless, there is one problem that makes things much more difficult to fix, specifically without the anti-malware program. Most of the adware versions that show you the pop-up advertisements modify the deep browser configurations, disabling access to the settings tab. So, if you try to change your browser settings after pop-up-related malware penetrates your system, your browser will crash soon. Sometimes, you will see no crash—however, a significant lag spike after pressing the “settings” key. The browser will stop reacting for ~ 30 secs, and after that, it will be back to the typical till you try to open settings once again.
