XBTL Virus 🔐 (.XBTL Files) — How to Remove?

Written by Brendan Smith
The Xbtl virus belongs under the ransomware type of malicious agent. Malware of such sort encrypts all user’s data on the computer (photos, text files, excel sheets, audio files, videos, etc) and adds its own extension to every file, creating the README.txt files in each folder which contains the encrypted files.

What is known about the Xbtlvirus?

☝️ A scientifically correct designation for the Xbtl would be “a ransomware-type infection”.

Xbtl adds its own .xbtl extension to the name of each encrypted file. For instance, a file named “photo.jpg” will be turned into “photo.jpg.xbtl”. Likewise, the Excel sheet with the name “table.xlsx” will be renamed to “table.xlsx.xbtl”, and so forth.

In every directory that contains the encoded files, a README.txt text file will be created. It is a ransom money memo. Therein you can find information on the ways of contacting the racketeers and some other remarks. The ransom note usually contains instructions on how to purchase the decryption tool from the racketeers. That is it.

How did my machine catch Xbtl ransomware?

There is a huge number of possible ways of ransomware injection.

Nowadays, there are three most exploited methods for malefactors to have ransomware working in your system. These are email spam, Trojan introduction and peer-to-peer networks.

If you access your mailbox and see emails that look just like notifications from utility services companies, delivery agencies like FedEx, Internet providers, and whatnot, but whose “from” field is unknown to you, be wary of opening those letters. They are most likely to have a malicious file attached to them. Thus it is even more dangerous to open any attachments that come with emails like these.

Another thing the hackers might try is a Trojan virus scheme1. A Trojan is a program that infiltrates into your machine disguised as something else. Imagine, you download an installer of some program you need or an update for some software. However, what is unpacked reveals itself a harmful agent that corrupts your data. Since the update wizard can have any title and any icon, you have to make sure that you can trust the resource of the stuff you’re downloading. The optimal way is to use the software companies’ official websites.

As for the peer-to-peer file transfer protocols like torrent trackers or eMule, the danger is that they are even more trust-based than the rest of the Internet. You can never know what you download until you get it. So you’d better be using trustworthy resources. Also, it is a good idea to scan the folder containing the downloaded items with the anti-malware utility as soon as the downloading is finished.

How do I get rid of the Xbtl virus?

It is important to inform you that besides encrypting your files, the Xbtl virus will most likely install the Azorult Spyware on your computer to get access to credentials to various accounts (including cryptocurrency wallets). The mentioned spyware2 can extract your logins and passwords from your browser’s auto-filling data.

Often criminals would decode several of your files so you know that they do have the decryption program. As Xbtl virus is a relatively new ransomware, safety measures engineers have not yet found a way to reverse its work. However, the anti-ransomware instruments are frequently updated, so the solution may soon be available.

Understandably, if the hackers succeed in encrypting victim’s critical files, the hopeless person will most likely comply with their demands. Nevertheless, paying a ransom gives no guarantee that you’re getting your blocked information back. It is still dangerous. After receiving the ransom, the racketeers may send a wrong decryption code to the injured party. There were reports about racketeers simply disappearing after getting the money without even bothering to reply.

The best safety measure against ransomware is to have a system restore point or the copies of your critical files in the cloud storage or at least on an external disk. Surely, that might be insufficient. Your most crucial thing could be that one you were working on when it all happened. Nevertheless, it is something. It is also wise to scan your drives with the anti-malware utility after the system is rolled back.

There are other ransomware products, besides Xbtl, that work similarly. Examples of those are Qqmt, Vvyu, Qqlo, and some others. The two basic differences between them and the Xbtl are the ransom amount and the method of encryption. The rest is almost identical: files become encoded, their extensions changed, ransom notes emerge in each directory containing encoded files.

Some fortunate users were able to decode the arrested files with the help of the free software provided by anti-ransomware experts. Sometimes the hackers accidentally send the decryption code to the victims in the ransom note. Such an extraordinary fail allows the user to restore the files. But naturally, one should never rely on such a chance. Make no mistake, ransomware is a tamperers’ tool to pull the money out of their victims.

How сan I avoid ransomware infection?

Xbtl ransomware doesn’t have a endless power, so as any similar malware.

You can protect yourself from ransomware infiltration within three easy steps:

  • Never open any letters from unknown senders with unknown addresses, or with content that has likely no connection to something you are expecting (how can you win in a lottery without participating in it?). In case the email subject is likely something you are waiting for, scrutinize all elements of the dubious letter with caution. A fake email will always contain a mistake.
  • Never use cracked or unknown programs. Trojan viruses are often shared as an element of cracked software, possibly under the guise of “patch” to prevent the license check. But untrusted programs are difficult to tell from reliable software, as trojans may also have the functionality you seek. Try to find information about this software product on the anti-malware forums, but the optimal way is not to use such software.
  • And finally, to be sure about the safety of the objects you downloaded, check them with GridinSoft Anti-Malware. This program will be a perfect shield for your personal computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

🤔 How can I open “.xbtl” files? Are the “.xbtl” files accessible?

Unfortunately, no. You need to decipher the “.xbtl” files first. Then you will be able to open them.

🤔 The encrypted files are very important to me. How can I decrypt them quickly?

If the “.xbtl” files contain some really important information, then you probably have them backed up. Otherwise, you might try to employ System Restore. The only question is whether you have saved any Restore Points that would be helpful now. The rest of the methods require patience.

🤔 You have advised using GridinSoft Anti-Malware to get rid of the Xbtl virus. Does it mean that all my files, currently encrypted, will be removed too?

No way! Unlike the ransomware program itself, the encrypted files do not jeopardize your system.

With the help of GridinSoft Anti-Malware, you can clean your system off the actual threats. The virus that has attacked your system is most likely still active and it scans your system periodically to encode any new files you might create on your computer after the initial attack. As it has been mentioned above, the Xbtl ransomware comes with the company. It installs backdoors and keyloggers that can take your account passwords by trespass and provide criminals with easy access to your computer in the future.

🤔 What actions should I take if the Xbtl virus has blocked my PC and I can’t get the activation key.

If that happened, you need to have a flash memory card with a previously installed Trojan Killer. Use Safe Mode to execute the procedure. You see, the ransomware runs automatically as the system boots and encodes any new files created or brought into your system. To suppress this function – use Safe Mode, which allows only the vital programs to run automatically. Consider reading our manual on running Windows in Safe Mode.

🤔 What could help the situation right now?

Many of the encrypted files might still be within your reach

  • If you exchanged your important files through email, you could still download them from your online mailbox.
  • You might have shared images or videos with your friends or family members. Just ask them to give those images back to you.
  • If you have initially downloaded any of your files from the Web, you can try to do it again.
  • Your messengers, social media pages, and cloud drives might have all those files too.
  • Maybe you still have the needed files on your old PC, a notebook, mobile, flash memory, etc.

USEFUL TIP: You can use file recovery programs5 to get your lost data back since ransomware encodes the copies of your files, removing the authentic ones. In the tutorial below, you can see how to use PhotoRec for such a restoration, but remember: you won’t be able to do it before you eradicate the virus with an anti-malware program.

Also, you can contact the following official fraud and scam sites to report this attack:

To report the attack, you can contact local executive boards. For instance, if you live in USA, you can have a talk with FBI Local field office, IC3 or Secret Service.
