The Trg virus belongs under the Xorist ransomware family. Harmful software of this type encrypts all user’s data on the computer (photos, text files, excel tables, audio files, videos, etc) and adds its specific extension to every file, leaving the КАК РАСШИФРОВАТЬ ФАЙЛЫ.txt text files in every folder which contains the encrypted files.
What is Trg virus?
☝️ A strictly accurate denomination for the Trg is “a Xorist family ransomware-type malicious agent”.
Trg adds its extra .trg extension to the title of every encoded file. For example, an image entitled “photo.jpg” will be changed to “photo.jpg.trg”. Likewise, the Excel table named “table.xlsx” will be altered to “table.xlsx.trg”, and so forth.
In each folder with the encoded files, a КАК РАСШИФРОВАТЬ ФАЙЛЫ.txt text file will appear. It is a ransom money memo. It contains information about the ways of contacting the racketeers and some other information. The ransom note usually contains a description of how to purchase the decryption tool from the tamperers. That is it.
Trg outline:

In the screenshot below, you can see what a folder with files encrypted by the Trg looks like. Each filename has the “.trg” extension appended to it.
How did my computer get infected with Trg ransomware?
There is a huge number of possible ways of ransomware infiltration.
There are currently three most popular ways for malefactors to have the Trg virus acting in your digital environment. These are email spam, Trojan infiltration and peer networks.
If you access your mailbox and see letters that look like familiar notifications from utility services companies, delivery agencies like FedEx, Internet providers, and whatnot, but whose “from” field is strange to you, beware of opening those emails. They are most likely to have a malicious file enclosed in them. So it is even riskier to open any attachments that come with letters like these.
Another thing the hackers might try is a Trojan horse scheme2. A Trojan is a program that infiltrates into your PC disguised as something else. For instance, you download an installer of some program you want or an update for some service. But what is unpacked reveals itself a harmful program that compromises your data. As the installation wizard can have any name and any icon, you’d better be sure that you can trust the source of the things you’re downloading. The best thing is to trust the software companies’ official websites.
As for the peer-to-peer networks like torrent trackers or eMule, the threat is that they are even more trust-based than the rest of the Internet. You can never guess what you download until you get it. So you’d better be using trustworthy resources. Also, it is reasonable to scan the directory containing the downloaded files with the antivirus as soon as the downloading is done.
How do I get rid of the Trg virus?
It is crucial to note that besides encrypting your data, the Trg virus will most likely deploy the Azorult Spyware on your machine to get access to credentials to various accounts (including cryptocurrency wallets). The mentioned program can extract your logins and passwords from your browser’s auto-filling data.
Often tamperers would decrypt several of your files to prove that they really have the decryption program. As Trg virus is a relatively new ransomware, safety measures designers have not yet found a method to undo its work. However, the decoding tools are constantly upgraded, so the solution may soon arrive.
Understandably, if the criminals succeed in encoding victim’s essential data, the desperate person will probably comply with their demands. However, paying to criminals gives no guarantee that you’re getting your data back. It is still dangerous. After obtaining the money, the racketeers may send a wrong decryption key to the injured party. There were reports about hackers just vanishing after getting the ransom without even bothering to reply.
The optimal safety measure against ransomware is to have a system restore point or the copies of your critical files in the cloud drive or at least on an external disk. Surely, that might be not enough. The most important thing could be that one you were working upon when it all went down. But at least it is something. It is also wise to scan your PC for viruses with the anti-malware utility after the system restoration.
There are other ransomware products, besides Trg, that work similarly. For instance, Oflg, Ofww, Aawt, and some others. The two major differences between them and the Trg are the ransom amount and the method of encryption. The rest is the same: documents become encrypted, their extensions altered, ransom notes appear in each directory containing encrypted files.
Some fortunate users were able to decrypt the blocked files with the help of the free software provided by anti-malware specialists. Sometimes the hackers mistakenly send the decoding code to the victims in the ransom note. Such an extraordinary fail allows the user to restore the files. But naturally, one should never rely on such a chance. Make no mistake, ransomware is a bandits’ tool to lay their hands on the money of their victims.
How сan I avoid ransomware injection?
Trg ransomware has no endless power, so as any similar malware.
You can defend your PC from its infiltration within three easy steps:
- Never open any emails from unknown mailboxes with unknown addresses, or with content that has likely no connection to something you are waiting for (can you win in a money prize draw without participating in it?). In case the email subject is more or less something you are waiting for, scrutinize all elements of the questionable email with caution. A hoax email will surely contain a mistake.
- Do not use cracked or untrusted software. Trojan viruses are often spreaded as an element of cracked software, most likely as a “patch” to prevent the license check. But potentially dangerous programs are difficult to tell from trustworthy ones, because trojans may also have the functionality you seek. You can try searching for information about this software product on the anti-malware message boards, but the best solution is not to use such software.
- And to be sure about the safety of the objects you downloaded, use GridinSoft Anti-Malware. This software will be a perfect armor for your personal computer.

FAQ
🤔 How can I open “.trg” files? Is it possible to open“.trg” files?
There’s no way to do it, unless the files “.trg” files are decrypted.
🤔 I really need to decrypt those “.trg” files ASAP. How can I do that?
It’s good if you have fаr-sightedly saved copies of these important files elsewhere. In case you haven’t, there is still a chance that you do have a Restore Point from some time ago to roll back the whole system to the moment when it had no virus yet, but already had your files. The rest of the methods require patience.
🤔 Will GridinSoft Anti-Malware remove all the encrypted files alongside the Trg virus?
Absolutely not! Your encrypted files are no threat to your PC.
GridinSoft Anti-Malware will delete the threats from your system. The ransomware that has attacked your device is must be still active and launching checks every so often to arrest any new files you might create on your computer after the infection. As it has been mentioned above, the Trg virus comes with the company. It installs backdoors and keyloggers that can take your account passwords by trespass and provide criminals with easy access to your computer in the future.
🤔 What actions should I take if the Trg virus has blocked my computer and I can’t get the activation code.
If that happened, you need to prepare a memory stick with a previously installed Trojan Killer. Use Safe Mode to perform the cleaning. You see, the ransomware starts automatically as the system boots and encrypts any new files created or imported into your PC. To block this process – use Safe Mode, which allows only the essential programs to run automatically. Consider reading our manual on running Windows in Safe Mode.
🤔 And what should I do now?
Many of the blocked files might still be within your reach
- If you sent or received your important files through email, you could still download them from your online mail server.
- You might have shared photographs or videos with your friends or family members. Simply ask them to give those pictures back to you.
- If you have initially downloaded any of your files from the Web, you can try doing it again.
- Your messengers, social networks pages, and cloud storage might have all those files too.
- It might be that you still have the needed files on your old computer, a laptop, mobile, external storage, etc.
HINT: You can employ data recovery utilities5 to get your lost data back since ransomware blocks the copies of your files, deleting the original ones. In the video below, you can learn how to use PhotoRec for such a recovery, but be advised: you can do it only after you remove the virus with an anti-malware program.
Also, you can contact the following official fraud and scam sites to report this attack:
