ROGHE Ransomware 🔐 (.ENC File) — Removal Guide

Written by Brendan Smith
The Roghe virus belongs with the ransomware type of infection. Ransomware of such sort encrypts all user’s data on the PC (images, documents, excel sheets, music, videos, etc) and appends its specific extension to every file, creating the pop-up window text files in each directory with the encrypted files.

What is Roghe virus?

☝️ A scientifically accurate designation for the Roghe is “a ransomware-type malicious agent”.

Roghe appends its extra .enc extension to every file’s title. For example, an image named “photo.jpg” will be altered to “photo.jpg.enc”. In the same manner, the Excel table named “table.xlsx” will be changed to “table.xlsx.enc”, and so forth.

In each directory containing the encrypted files, a pop-up window will aooear. It is a ransom money note. Therein you can find information about the ways of contacting the racketeers and some other remarks. The ransom note usually contains a description of how to buy the decryption tool from the racketeers. That is pretty much the scheme of the crime.

Roghe abstract:
Name Roghe Virus
Extension .enc

Detection Crytex.Virus.FileInfector.DDS, Win32/Filecoder.OLC, Malware-Cryptor.InstallCore.5
Symptoms Your files (photos, videos, documents) get a .enc extension and you can’t open them.

How did Roghe ransomware end up on my PC?

There are many possible ways of ransomware injection.

Nowadays, there are three most exploited methods for evil-doers to have ransomware settled in your system. These are email spam, Trojan infiltration and peer-to-peer networks.

If you access your mailbox and see letters that look like familiar notifications from utility services companies, delivery agencies like FedEx, Internet providers, and whatnot, but whose “from” field is strange to you, be wary of opening those letters. They are most likely to have a ransomware file enclosed in them. Thus it is even more dangerous to open any attachments that come with letters like these.

Another thing the hackers might try is a Trojan horse scheme1. A Trojan is an object that infiltrates into your machine pretending to be something different. Imagine, you download an installer for some program you want or an update for some program. But what is unpacked reveals itself a harmful agent that encrypts your data. Since the installation package can have any title and any icon, you have to make sure that you can trust the resource of the files you’re downloading. The best way is to trust the software developers’ official websites.

As for the peer-to-peer networks like torrent trackers or eMule, the threat is that they are even more trust-based than the rest of the Web. You can never know what you download until you get it. So you’d better be using trustworthy resources. Also, it is a good idea to scan the folder containing the downloaded objects with the anti-malware utility as soon as the downloading is complete.

How to remove the Roghe virus?

It is important to inform you that besides encrypting your files, the Roghe virus will most likely deploy the Azorult Spyware on your PC to get access to credentials to different accounts (including cryptocurrency wallets). The mentioned spyware2 can derive your logins and passwords from your browser’s auto-filling data.

Often criminals would decrypt some of your files to prove that they do have the decryption tool. As Roghe virus is a relatively recent ransomware, anti-malware engineers have not yet found a method to undo its work. Nevertheless, the decryption tools are constantly updated, so the solution may soon be available.

Sure thing, if the malefactors do the job of encrypting someone’s critical data, the desperate person will most likely fulfill their demands. Despite that, paying a ransom gives no guarantee that you’re getting your data back. It is still dangerous. After getting the money, the racketeers may send a wrong decryption key to the injured party. There were reports of criminals just vanishing after getting the money without even writing back.

The best safety measure against ransomware is to have a system restore point or the copies of your essential files in the cloud drive or at least on an external storage. Obviously, that might be insufficient. Your most important thing could be that file you were working on when it all went down. But at least it is something. It is also advisable to scan your PC for viruses with the antivirus program after the system is rolled back.

Roghe is not the only ransomware of its kind, since there are other specimens of ransomware out there that act in the same manner. For instance, Hhoo, Hhee, Vvmm, and some others. The two basic differences between them and the Roghe are the ransom amount and the encoding method. The rest is almost identical: documents become encrypted, their extensions altered, ransom notes appear in every folder containing encrypted files.

Some fortunate victims were able to decode the arrested files with the aid of the free software provided by anti-ransomware developers. Sometimes the hackers accidentally send the decoding code to the victims in the ransom readme. Such an epic fail allows the user to restore the files. But naturally, one should never expect such a chance. Remember, ransomware is a bandits’ instrument to pull the money out of their victims.

How сan I avoid ransomware attack?

Roghe ransomware has no endless power, so as any similar malware.

You can protect your system from ransomware attack taking several easy steps:

  • Ignore any letters from unknown senders with unknown addresses, or with content that has likely no connection to something you are waiting for (can you win in a money prize draw without participating in it?). If the email subject is likely something you are waiting for, check all elements of the questionable letter carefully. A hoax letter will always contain a mistake.
  • Do not use cracked or unknown software. Trojans are often spreaded as a part of cracked software, most likely under the guise of “patch” preventing the license check. Understandably, untrusted programs are difficult to distinguish from reliable ones, as trojans may also have the functionality you seek. Try to find information about this program on the anti-malware message boards, but the best way is not to use such programs at all.
  • And finally, to be sure about the safety of the objects you downloaded, check them with GridinSoft Anti-Malware. This program will be a powerful armor for your personal computer.

FAQ

🤔 How can I open “.enc” files? Are the “.enc” files accessible?

Unfortunately, no. You need to decipher the “.enc” files first. Then you will be able to open them.

🤔 I really need to decrypt those “.enc” files ASAP. How can I do that?

It’s good if you have fаr-sightedly saved copies of these important files elsewhere. If not, there is still a function of System Restore but it needs a Restore Point to be previously saved. There are other ways to beat ransomware, but they take time.

🤔 You have advised using GridinSoft Anti-Malware to get rid of the Roghe virus. Does it mean that all my files, currently encrypted, will be removed too?

Absolutely not! The encrypted files are not harmful, so they won’t be deleted.

With the help of GridinSoft Anti-Malware, you can clean your PC off the actual threats. The ransomware that has attacked your system is most likely still functional and it scans your system every so often to arrest any new files you might create on your PC after the infection. As it has already been said, the Roghe virus comes with the company. It installs backdoors and keyloggers that can take your account passwords by trespass and provide malefactors with easy access to your system after some time.

🤔 What actions should I take if the Roghe virus has blocked my computer and I can’t get the activation code.

In such a case, you need to have a flash memory drive with a previously installed Trojan Killer. Use Safe Mode to perform the cleaning. The point is that the ransomware runs automatically as the system boots and encrypts any new files created or imported into your PC. To suppress this process – use Safe Mode, which allows only the vital applications to run upon system start. Consider reading our manual on booting Windows in Safe Mode.

🤔 What could help the situation right now?

Many of the blocked files might still be within your reach

  • If you exchanged your critical files by email, you could still download them from your online mail server.
  • You might have shared photographs or videos with your friends or family members. Simply ask them to give those images back to you.
  • If you have initially got any of your files from the Internet, you can try to do it again.
  • Your messengers, social media pages, and cloud disks might have all those files too.
  • It might be that you still have the needed files on your old PC, a portable device, mobile, memory stick, etc.

HINT: You can employ file recovery programs5 to get your lost data back since ransomware blocks the copies of your files, deleting the authentic ones. In the tutorial below, you can learn how to recover your files with PhotoRec, but remember: you won’t be able to do it before you kill the virus with an anti-malware program.

Also, you can contact the following governmental fraud and scam sites to report this attack:

To report the attack, you can contact local executive boards. For instance, if you live in USA, you can have a talk with FBI Local field office, IC3 or Secret Service.
