What are Retressive pop-ups?

Retressive popups are an outcome of adware activity. Adware is a sort of malware that suggests you the pay-per-view of pay-per-click advertisements, which produces a substantial amount of profit for adware distributors. These advertisements may include sometimes shocking material, or have a web link to malicious content/website, because adware maintainers have no purpose to examine the goodness of the content they are going to reveal – their solitary target is money.

Pop-up promotions itself is a very good, affordable and extremely productive marketing tool1. It makes it possible for the vendor to link the buyers’ attention to their website, as well as the customers to get the dynamic updates on the goods they want to buy. When the consumer will get a pop-up alert that the TV set he likes to purchase is available at the online store he/she checked out previously with a 15% discount, one will definitely use this chance and purchase it. Taking into consideration the incredibly low price for the popups and their targeting, such an advertising and marketing method is a much-loved thing amidst the marketing departments of large online sellers.

Nevertheless, such a profitable scheme could not be missed by malware creators. Potential to demonstrate the popup advertisements forcibly to the people of malware invasion is an ideal basis for malevolent manipulations with the popup ads. And Retressive.website ads is just one of hundreds that are “employed” in this scheme.

How have I got the Retressive virus?

There are a number of ways of getting contaminated by the adware that lead to the Retressive popups storm. A lion’s part of this computer virus cases is after the freeware or cracked programs, that are spread on the peering networks. Freeware can also be downloaded from the official site, and the adware is supplied as a legit bundled program.

There is no need to blame yourself. A number of users frequently make use of the uncertain programs from untrusted sources: abandonware, a wide range of apps that are free, and even hacked programs. All of these types of programs are risky, because it is extremely easy to include a Retressive malware under the cover of part of the license hacking script, or as a part of the self-made algoritm within the Windows optimization tool.

Retressive popup virus may also be hidden in the advertisement somewhere on the unusual site. Such web pages are typically filled with colorful and blinking ads, and their proprietors usually permit any promos to be posted on their page. Therefore, clicking on such banners is a risky thing: only the ad contractor realizes what will happen when you press this ad. Besides some “light” viruses, like adware or undesirable programs, you may also get something a lot more damaging, like ransomware or coin miner; the substantial share of coin miners distribution is exactly after the malicious advertisements.

People dislike popups

The statistic shows that people dislike popup advertising more than other types of promotions

Potentially unwanted applications, like Retressive pop-up virus may provoke a variety of troubles on your computer. Distracting is not the single problem – pop-up notifications can present you the advertisements, where you are offered to get one more dubious application, or “a amazing anti-malware tool”. Scareware is often spread under the last motto. Potentially undesirable programs, in turn, may have spyware functions. And it is quite hard to distinguish the undesirable app from a good one, if you don’t know the exact names. Besides the PUPs and dubious antiviruses, popup-related ads are also chosen as a spreading way by different trojan viruses, for example – coin miners. The consequences of actions of such malware is 100% unpleasant, and can cost you several hundreds of dollars. And even if you are not interacting with these banners, they may be clicked by someone who also uses your PC – parents, children, spouse, etc. So the things can become much more serious, and it will be much harder to deal with it without information loss. It is recommended to eliminate the viruses with anti-malware applications as soon as possible.

How can I get rid of Retressive pop-up advertisements?

The tutorial of Retressive adware elimination contains 2 parts. Initially, we need to eliminate the malware, and after that deal with the results of its action. The removal process is pretty easy, because it can be performed even with making use of Microsoft Defender – security tool that is present on all computers with Windows 8/10. Nevertheless, as a result of its huge resources consumption, along with some errors that may be crucial for some groups of individuals, Defender is frequently turned off by the users, so its use is probably impossible. Additionally, various trojan viruses can switch off the embedded antivirus. It is far better to use the separated program that will not have such vulnerabilities.

I would certainly recommend you to utilize Gridinsoft Anti-Malware2 – a well-proven security device that will undoubtedly wipe out the malware from your computer and make an impenetrable cover with a Proactive protection function. But let’s manage Retressive adware first.

When the browsers are reset, you need to ensure that your browser will connect the accurate DNS while connecting to the website you need. Make a text file titled “hosts” on your computer’s desktop, after that open it and fill it with the following lines3:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Find the hosts.txt file in C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc directory. Rename this file to “hosts.old.txt” (to distinguish it from the new one), and then move the file you created on the desktop to this folder. Remove the hosts.old from this folder. Now you have your hosts file as good as new.

However, there is one trouble that makes the things a lot harder to repair, specifically without the anti-malware program. A lot of adware variants that are used to show you the Retressive pop-up ads are altering the deep browser setups, disabling an access to the settings tab. So, if you try to fix your browser settings after your PC was infected by pop-up-related malware, your browser will certainly collapse soon. In certain cases, you will see no crash, however, large lag spike after pressing the “settings” key.
