QD45H Virus Files of Ransomware — How to remove virus?

Written by Brendan Smith
The Qd45h virus belongs with the ransomware type of infection. Harmful software of this type encrypts all user’s data on the PC (images, text files, excel tables, music, videos, etc) and appends its own extension to every file, creating the wo5X_HOW_TO_DECRYPT.txt text files in each directory containing encrypted files.

Qd45h virus: what is known so far?

☝️ A scientifically accurate denomination for the Qd45h would be “a ransomware malicious agent”.

The pattern of renaming is this: [random string].qd45h. In the course of encryption, a file entitled, for example, “report.docx” will be renamed to “report.docx.319vso398BIY31E8FBCCV9136V.qd45h”.

In each folder containing the encrypted files, a wo5X_HOW_TO_DECRYPT.txt file will be found. It is a ransom money memo. It contains information on the ways of paying the ransom and some other remarks. The ransom note most probably contains instructions on how to purchase the decryption tool from the tamperers. That is it.

Qd45h overview:
Name Qd45h Virus
Extension .[random string].qd45h
Ransomware note wo5X_HOW_TO_DECRYPT.txt
Detection Trojan-Ransom.MSIL.Purgen, Win64/GenKryptik.FNKZ, Ransom:MSIL/Khonsari.A
Symptoms Your files (photos, videos, documents) have a .[random string].qd45h extension and you can’t open them.

How did my machine catch Qd45h ransomware?

There are many possible ways of ransomware injection.

Nowadays, there are three most popular ways for evil-doers to have ransomware settled in your system. These are email spam, Trojan infiltration and peer networks.

If you open your mailbox and see emails that look just like notifications from utility services companies, postal agencies like FedEx, Internet providers, and whatnot, but whose addresser is unknown to you, beware of opening those letters. They are most likely to have a viral file enclosed in them. So it is even riskier to download any attachments that come with letters like these.

Another option for ransom hunters is a Trojan horse scheme1. A Trojan is an object that infiltrates into your computer pretending to be something different. Imagine, you download an installer of some program you need or an update for some software. But what is unboxed reveals itself a harmful agent that encrypts your data. As the installation wizard can have any title and any icon, you have to make sure that you can trust the resource of the files you’re downloading. The best way is to use the software companies’ official websites.

As for the peer file transfer protocols like torrent trackers or eMule, the threat is that they are even more trust-based than the rest of the Web. You can never know what you download until you get it. Our suggestion is that you use trustworthy websites. Also, it is a good idea to scan the directory containing the downloaded items with the anti-malware utility as soon as the downloading is done.

How do I get rid of the Qd45h virus?

It is crucial to note that besides encrypting your data, the Qd45h virus will probably install the Azorult Spyware on your PC to get access to credentials to different accounts (including cryptocurrency wallets). That spyware2 can derive your logins and passwords from your browser’s auto-filling data.

Sometimes criminals would decrypt few of your files to prove that they really have the decryption tool. As Qd45h virus is a relatively new ransomware, security software designers have not yet found a method to undo its work. Nevertheless, the decryption instruments are frequently upgraded, so the effective countermeasure may soon arrive.

Understandably, if the malefactors succeed in encrypting victim’s essential data, the desperate person will most likely fulfill their demands. Despite that, paying to criminals gives no guarantee that you’re getting your data back. It is still risky. After getting the money, the racketeers may deliver a wrong decryption key to the victim. There were reports about ransomware developers just vanishing after getting the ransom without even bothering to reply.

The best safety measure against ransomware is to have a system restore point or the copies of your essential files in the cloud storage or at least on an external storage. Of course, that might be insufficient. Your most important thing could be that file you were working upon when it all went down. But at least it is something. It is also wise to scan your PC for viruses with the antivirus program after the system is rolled back.

There are other ransomware products, besides Qd45h, that work similarly. Examples of those are Vfgj, Zaqi, Loov, and some others. The two main differences between them and the Qd45h are the ransom amount and the encoding method. The rest is the same: files become encrypted, their extensions changed, ransom notes are created in every folder containing encrypted files.

Some fortunate users were able to decrypt the blocked files with the help of the free tools provided by anti-ransomware specialists. Sometimes the hackers accidentally send the decoding key to the victims in the ransom readme. Such an epic fail allows the user to restore the files. But naturally, one should never rely on such a chance. Remember, ransomware is a criminals’ technology to lay their hands on the money of their victims.

How сan I avert ransomware infiltration?

Qd45h ransomware doesn’t have a endless power, so as any similar malware.

You can defend your computer from ransomware infiltration taking three easy steps:

  • Ignore any letters from unknown mailboxes with strange addresses, or with content that has nothing to do with something you are waiting for (how can you win in a money prize draw without even taking part in it?). If the email subject is more or less something you are waiting for, check all elements of the dubious letter with caution. A hoax email will surely have a mistake.
  • Avoid using cracked or unknown programs. Trojan viruses are often distributed as an element of cracked products, possibly under the guise of “patch” to prevent the license check. But potentially dangerous programs are difficult to distinguish from trustworthy software, because trojans may also have the functionality you need. You can try searching for information on this software product on the anti-malware message boards, but the optimal way is not to use such software.
  • And to be sure about the safety of the files you downloaded, check them with GridinSoft Anti-Malware. This program will be a perfect defense for your PC.

Frequently Asked Questions

🤔 Are the “.[random string].qd45h” files accessible?

Negative. That is why ransomware is so frustrating. Until you decode the “.[random string].qd45h” files you will not be able to access them.

🤔 I really need to decrypt those “.[random string].qd45h” files ASAP. How can I do that?

Hopefully, you have made a copy of those important files. In case you haven’t, there is still a chance that you do have a Restore Point from some time ago to roll back the whole system to the moment when it had no virus yet, but already had your files. There are other ways to beat ransomware, but they take time.

🤔 If GridinSoft deletes the Qd45h malware, will it also delete my files that were encrypted?

Of course not. The encrypted files are not harmful, so they won’t be deleted.

GridinSoft Anti-Malware will delete active infections from your computer. The malware that has infiltrated your device is most likely still functional and it scans your system periodically to arrest any new files you might create on your PC after the infection. As it has been mentioned above, the Qd45h ransomware does not come alone. It installs backdoors and keyloggers that can steal your account credentials and provide hackers with easy access to your PC after some time.

🤔 What should I do if the Qd45h virus has blocked my PC and I can’t get the activation key.

In such a case, you need to prepare a flash memory card with a pre-installed Trojan Killer. Use Safe Mode to execute the procedure. The point is that the ransomware starts automatically as the system launches and encodes any new files created or imported into your machine. To block this function – use Safe Mode, which allows only the essential programs to run upon system start. Consider reading our manual on running Windows in Safe Mode.

🤔 And what should I do now?

Some of the encrypted data can be found elsewhere.

  • If you exchanged your important files by email, you could still download them from your online mail server.
  • You may have shared photographs or videos with your friends or relatives. Simply ask them to send those images back to you.
  • If you have initially downloaded any of your files from the Web, you can try to do it again.
  • Your messengers, social media pages, and cloud drives might have all those files as well.
  • Maybe you still have the needed files on your old computer, a laptop, mobile, memory stick, etc.

USEFUL TIP: You can use file recovery programs5 to retrieve your lost information since ransomware encodes the copies of your files, removing the original ones. In the video below, you can see how to recover your files with PhotoRec, but be advised: you can do it only after you kill the ransomware itself with an anti-malware program.

Also, you can contact the following official fraud and scam sites to report this attack:

To report the attack, you can contact local executive boards. For instance, if you live in USA, you can have a talk with FBI Local field office, IC3 or Secret Service.
