What are Editneed pop-ups?

Editneed popups are an outcome of adware action. Adware is a kind of malware that shows you the pay-per-view of pay-per-click ads, which generates a major amount of income for adware suppliers. These ads may include explicit information, or have a web link to harmful content/website, considering that adware maintainers have no reason to check the goodness of the web content they are going to show – their solitary target is cash.

Pop-up promotions itself is a very good, affordable and extremely productive advertising instrument1. It allows the seller to link the customers’ attention to their website, and the buyers to get the dynamic updates on the goods they wish to buy. When the customer will receive a pop-up alert that the TV set he wishes to buy is provided at the online shop he/she checked out previously with a 15% price cut, one will surely use this possibility and buy it. Considering the very low cost for the popups and their targeting, such a promotion and marketing tool is a much-loved thing among the advertising departments of huge internet retailers.

Nonetheless, such a rewarding plan could not be missed by virus creators. Option to demonstrate the popup ads forcibly to the people of malware attack is an excellent basis for malevolent manipulations with the popup promotions. And Editneed.com ads is just one of hundreds that are “employed” in this system.

How have I got the Editneed virus?

There are a lot of methods of getting infected by the adware that trigger the Editneed popups storm. A lion’s part of this computer virus incidents is after the free software or cracked programs, that are spread on the peering networks. Free software can additionally be downloaded from the official web page, and the adware is provided as a legal bundled program.

There is no need to blame yourself. A huge amount of people frequently use the dubious programs from untrusted sources: abandonware, different tools that are free of cost, and even hacked programs. All of these kinds of programs are risky, since it is extremely easy to integrate a Editneed malware under the guise of part of the license hacking script, or as a part of the self-made algoritm inside of the Windows optimization tool.

Editneed popup malware can also be concealed in the promotion somewhere on the odd website. Such web pages are in most cases full of colorful and blinking ads, and their owners often approve any kind of promotions to be posted on their web page. Thus, clicking on such banners is a shot in the dark: only the ad contractor realizes what will happen when you press this advertisement. Besides some “light” viruses, like adware or undesirable programs, you can also receive something far more risky, like ransomware or coin miner; the big share of coin miners distribution is exactly after the malicious promotions.

People dislike popups

The statistic shows that people dislike popup advertising more than other types of promotions

Potentially unwanted applications, like Editneed popup virus can cause a lot of problems on your computer. Distracting is not the single problem – pop-up notifications can present you the banners, where you are offered to download another unknown application, or “a perfect anti-malware tool”. Scareware is usually spread with the use of the last motto. Potentially undesirable programs, in turn, can have spyware functions. And it is very hard to distinguish the undesirable app from a legit one, if you don’t know the exact names. Besides the potentially unwanted programs and dubious antiviruses, popup-related advertisements are also chosen as a distribution method by different trojan viruses, for example – coin miners. The consequences of actions of such viruses is 100% unwanted, and can cost you several hundreds of dollars. And even if you are not tapping these ads, they may be clicked by whoever who also makes use of your PC – parents, children, spouse, etc. So the situation can become much more serious, and it will be much harder to solve it without information loss. It is recommended to eliminate the viruses with antivirus applications as soon as possible.

How can I get rid of Editneed pop-up advertisements?

The manual of Editneed adware clearing contains 2 sections. First, we need to remove the malware, and after that repair the results of its action. The removal procedure is very easy, since it may be done even with the use of Microsoft Defender – anti-virus program that is available on all computers with Windows 8/10. Nevertheless, as a result of its huge resources consumption, along with some problems that can be crucial for some groups of users, Defender is often disabled by the users, so its utilization is probably impossible. Moreover, different trojan viruses can shut off the embedded antivirus. It is much better to use the separated program that will not have such weakness.

When the browsers are reset, you need to make sure that your browser will connect the right DNS while connecting to the site you want. Create a text file named “hosts” on your desktop, after that open it and fill it with the following content3:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Find the hosts.txt file in C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc directory. Rename this file to “hosts.old.txt” (to distinguish it from the new one), and then move the file you created on the desktop to this folder. Remove the hosts.old from this folder. Now you have your hosts file as good as new.

Nonetheless, there is one issue that makes the things a lot more difficult to repair, particularly without the anti-malware software. Most of adware versions that are utilized to show you the Editneed pop-up advertisements are modifying the deep browser setups, disabling an access to the settings tab. So, if you try to fix your browser settings after your computer was penetrated by pop-up-related malware, your browser will certainly collapse soon. In certain cases, you will see no crash, but significant lag spike after pressing the “settings” key. Browser will stop reacting for ~ 30 seconds, and afterwards it will be back to the normal, till you attempt to open settings again.
