What are Ligamedia pop-ups?

Ligamedia popups are a result of adware activity. Adware is a type of malware that presents you the pay-per-view of pay-per-click ads, which produces a substantial volume of income for adware distributors. These ads might have explicit material, or have a link to harmful content/website, since adware maintainers have no reason to inspect the goodness of the material they are going to show – their solitary target is cash.

Pop-up promotions itself is an excellent, low-priced and extremely successful advertising instrument1. It allows the seller to attach the buyers’ attention to their website, as well as the customers to receive the dynamic updates on the goods they wish to buy. When the customer will get a pop-up alert that the TV set he likes to purchase is available at the online shop he/she saw previously with a 15% discount, one will undoubtedly use this opportunity and buy it. Considering the incredibly low cost for the popups and their targeting, such a marketing tool is a favorite thing amongst the advertising departments of huge online sellers.

Nevertheless, such a rewarding scheme could not be missed by virus creators. Ability to show the popup ads forcibly to the people of malware invasion is a perfect basis for evil-minded manipulations with the popup ads. And Ligamedia.casa advertisements is one of hundreds that are “employed” in this scheme.

How have I got the Ligamedia virus?

There are a plenty of ways of getting infected by the adware that create the Ligamedia popups tornado. A lion’s part of this malware incidents is after the free software or cracked programs, that are spread on the peering networks. Freeware can likewise be downloaded from the main web page, and the adware is presented as a legal bundled program.

There is no need to blame yourself. A plenty of individuals oftentimes make use of the unreliable programs from untrusted providers: abandonware, a wide range of tools that are free of cost, or perhaps hacked programs. All of these types of applications are risky, because it is very simple to include a Ligamedia malware under the guise of part of the license hacking script, or as a component of the self-made algoritm within the Windows optimization tool.

Ligamedia popup virus can also be concealed in the ad somewhere on the unusual website. Such web pages are in most cases loaded with bright and blinking advertisements, and their proprietors usually approve any kind of promotions to be posted on their web page. Hence, clicking on such banners is a shot in the dark: only the advertisement provider knows what will happen when you click this ad. Besides some “light” viruses, like adware or unwanted programs, you may also receive something far more damaging, like ransomware or coin miner; the big share of coin miners distribution is exactly after the malicious promotions.

Potentially unwanted programs, like Ligamedia pop-up virus may provoke a wide range of problems on your PC. Distracting is not the only problem – pop-ups can show you the banners, where you are offered to get one more strange program, or “a perfect security tool”. Scareware is usually distributed with the use of the last slogun. Potentially undesirable programs, in turn, may have spyware functionality. And it is quite hard to distinguish the unwanted app from a legit one, if you don’t know the exact names. Besides the PUPs and fake antiviruses, popup-related advertisements are also chosen as a distribution way by various trojan viruses, for example – coin miners. The consequences of activity of such viruses is 100% unwanted, and can cost you hundreds of dollars. And even if you are not clicking these advertisements, they may be clicked by someone who also uses your personal computer – parents, children, spouse, etc. So the situation can become much more serious, and it will be much harder to solve it without data and money loss. It is recommended to eliminate the viruses with anti-malware programs as soon as possible.

The guide of Ligamedia adware clearing includes 2 parts. Initially, we need to exterminate the malware, and after that repair the results of its activity. The elimination process is pretty easy, due to the fact that it may be executed even with using Microsoft Defender – anti-virus software that is present on all personal computers with Windows 8/10. However, as a result of its substantial resources utilization, along with some bugs that can be crucial for some kinds of individuals, Defender is frequently turned off by the users, so its use is most likely impossible. What’s more, different trojan viruses are capable to shut off the embedded antivirus. It is better to make use of the separated program that will not have such vulnerabilities.

When the browsers are reset, you need to make sure that your web browser will connect the accurate DNS while connecting to the website you want. Make a text file titled “hosts” on your pc’s desktop, then open it and fill it with the following lines3:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Find the hosts.txt file in C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc directory. Rename this file to “hosts.old.txt” (to distinguish it from the new one), and then move the file you created on the desktop to this folder. Remove the hosts.old from this folder. Now you have your hosts file as good as new.

However, there is one problem that makes things much harder to restore, especially without the anti-malware software. The majority of adware variations that are utilized to show you the Ligamedia pop-up advertisements are changing the deep browser configurations, disabling an access to the settings tab. So, if you attempt to fix your browser settings after your machine was penetrated by pop-up-related malware, your browser will certainly crash quickly. Sometimes, you will see no crash, but significant lag spike after pressing the “settings” key. Browser will stop reacting for ~ 30 seconds, and then it will be back to the typical, until you attempt to open settings again.
