What are Garnly pop-ups?

Garnly popups are an outcome of adware activity. Adware is a sort of malware that suggests you the pay-per-view of pay-per-click advertisements, which creates a major volume of earnings for adware representatives. These ads might consist of sometimes shocking information, or have a web link to harmful content/website, because adware maintainers have no purpose to inspect the goodness of the material they are going to reveal – their solitary target is money.

Pop-up marketing itself is a very good, low-priced and extremely productive marketing instrument1. It allows the seller to attach the buyers’ interest to their website, and the customers to receive the dynamic updates on the goods they want to purchase. When the person will receive a pop-up notification that the TV set he desires to purchase is offered at the online store he/she saw earlier with a 15% discount, one will certainly use this possibility and buy it. Taking into consideration the very low cost for the popups and their targeting, such an advertising tool is a favorite thing amongst the advertising teams of huge online sellers.

Nevertheless, such a successful strategy could not be missed by virus creators. Potential to demonstrate the popup ads forcibly to the targets of malware attack is an excellent basis for evil-minded adjustments with the popup advertisements. And Garnly.com ads is among hundreds that are “employed” in this system.

How have I got the Garnly virus?

There are a number of ways of becoming contaminated by the adware that lead to the Garnly popups storm. A lion’s part of this computer virus instances is after the free software or cracked programs, that are spread on the peering networks. Free software may additionally be downloaded from the official web page, and the adware is presented as a legit bundled program.

There is no need to blame yourself. A lot of people frequently work with the unreliable programs from untrusted providers: abandonware, a wide range of tools that are free, and even hacked programs. All of these types of programs are dangerous, due to the fact that it is quite easy to integrate a Garnly malware under the cover of part of the license hacking script, or as a component of the self-made algoritm inside of the Windows optimization tool.

Garnly popup virus can additionally be hidden in the ad somewhere on the strange web page. Such websites are generally loaded with bright and blinking advertisements, and their proprietors generally approve any kind of promotions to be posted on their web page. For this reason, clicking such banners is a shot in the dark: only the advertisement contractor knows what will occur when you press this advertisement. Besides some “light” viruses, like adware or undesirable programs, you may also receive something far more threatening, like ransomware or coin miner; the substantial share of coin miners distribution is exactly after the malicious ads.

People dislike popups

The statistic shows that people dislike popup advertising more than other types of promotions

Potentially unwanted applications, like Garnly popup virus can initiate a variety of troubles on your PC. Distracting is not the single problem – pop-up notifications can display you the banners, where you are offered to download another dubious program, or “a perfect anti-malware tool”. Scareware is often spread with the last slogun. Potentially unwanted applications, in turn, can have spyware functionality. And it is pretty hard to distinguish the unwanted app from a legit one, if you don’t know the exact names. Besides the PUPs and fake antiviruses, popup-related promotions are also exploited as a distribution way by various trojan viruses, for example – coin miners. The consequences of actions of such malware is 100% unwanted, and can cost you hundreds of dollars. And even if you are not clicking these ads, they can be clicked by someone who also makes use of your PC – parents, children, spouse, etc. So the situation may become much more serious, and it will be much harder to deal with it without information loss. It is recommended to remove the viruses with anti-malware programs as soon as possible.

How can I get rid of Garnly pop-up advertisements?

The manual of Garnly adware clearing consists of 2 parts. First, we need to eliminate the malware, and then fix the results of its activity. The removal procedure is very easy, since it may be done even with the use of Microsoft Defender – security tool that is available on all personal computers with Windows 8/10. Nevertheless, as a result of its huge resources usage, along with some failures that can be pivotal for some types of users, Defender is oftentimes disabled by the users, so its use is probably impossible. Moreover, various trojan viruses have the ability to shut off the embedded antivirus. It is far better to make use of the separated program that will not have such weakness.

I would certainly advise you to use Gridinsoft Anti-Malware2 – a well-proven security device that will undoubtedly exterminate the malware from your system and also make an impenetrable shield with a Proactive protection function. However, let’s take care of Garnly adware initially.

When the browsers are reset, you need to make sure that your browser will definitely connect the appropriate DNS while connecting to the website you need. Make a text file named “hosts” on your desktop, after that open it and fill it with the following text3:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Find the hosts.txt file in C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc directory. Rename this file to “hosts.old.txt” (to distinguish it from the new one), and then move the file you created on the desktop to this folder. Remove the hosts.old from this folder. Now you have your hosts file as good as new.

Nevertheless, there is one issue that makes the things much harder to repair, especially without the anti-malware software. A lot of adware variations that are utilized to show you the Garnly pop-up ads are adjusting the deep browser setups, disabling an access to the settings tab. So, if you attempt to fix your browser settings after your PC was infected by pop-up-related malware, your browser will crash quickly. In some cases, you will see no crash, but large lag spike after pressing the “settings” key. Browser will stop responding for ~ 30 secs, and after that it will be back to the normal, till you attempt to open settings once more.
