What are Defence-p pop-ups?

Defence-p popups are a consequence of adware activity. Adware is a kind of malware that presents you the pay-per-view of pay-per-click advertisements, which creates a large volume of revenue for adware distributors. These advertisements may consist of explicit information, or have a link to malicious content/website, since adware maintainers have no purpose to check the goodness of the material they are going to show – their solitary target is money.

Pop-up advertising itself is a very good, cheap and really successful advertising method1. It permits the seller to link the customers’ interest to their website, and the customers to receive the dynamic updates on the goods they wish to buy. When the person will receive a pop-up notification that the TV set he likes to buy is available at the online shop he/she saw previously with a 15% discount, one will undoubtedly use this chance and buy it. Considering the extremely small cost for the popups and their targeting, such a promotion and marketing method is a favourite thing amongst the advertising teams of huge internet retail stores.

Nonetheless, such a rewarding scheme could not be missed by malware creators. Ability to demonstrate the popup ads forcibly to the people of malware invasion is a perfect basis for malevolent manipulations with the popup advertisements. And Defence-pc.com advertisements is one of hundreds that are “employed” in this system.

How have I got the Defence-p virus?

There are a number of methods of getting infected by the adware that create the Defence-p popups tornado. A lion’s part of this virus incidents is after the freeware or cracked programs, that are distributed on the peering networks. Freeware may likewise be downloaded from the main web page, and the adware is provided as a legal bundled program.

There is no need to blame yourself. A plenty of individuals often make use of the unreliable programs from untrusted sources: abandonware, different utilities that are free of cost, and even hacked programs. Every one of these types of programs are dangerous, since it is very simple to integrate a Defence-p malware under the cover of part of the license hacking script, or as a component of the self-made algoritm inside of the Windows optimization tool.

Defence-p popup malware can likewise be hidden in the promotion somewhere on the unusual site. Such sites are typically full of bright and blinking ads, and their proprietors typically approve any type of promotions to be placed on their page. For this reason, clicking such banners is a shot in the dark: only the ad provider knows what will happen when you press this ad. Besides some “light” viruses, like adware or undesirable programs, you may also get something much more damaging, like ransomware or coin miner; the substantial share of coin miners distribution is exactly after the malicious promotions.

People dislike popups

Potentially undesirable programs, like Defence-p pop-up virus may initiate a wide range of problems on your personal computer. Distracting is not the single problem – pop-ups may present you the advertisements, where you are offered to download one more unknown program, or “a effective anti-malware tool”. Scareware is often spread with the last slogun. Potentially undesirable applications, in turn, can have spyware functionality. And it is quite hard to distinguish the undesirable app from a good one, if you don’t know the exact names. Besides the potentially unwanted programs and fake antiviruses, popup-related ads are also used as a spreading method by various trojan viruses, for example – coin miners. The consequences of activity of such malware is 100% unpleasant, and can cost you several hundreds of dollars. And even if you are not clicking these advertisements, they may be clicked by whoever who also uses your computer – parents, children, spouse, etc. So the things may become much more serious, and it will be much harder to solve it without information loss. It is recommended to eliminate the viruses with anti-malware applications as soon as possible.

The manual of Defence-p adware removal consists of 2 parts. Initially, we need to remove the malware, and after that repair the results of its activity. The elimination task is pretty simple, due to the fact that it can be done even with using Microsoft Defender – anti-virus program that is available on all personal computers with Windows 8/10. However, due to its huge resources consumption, as well as some errors that may be crucial for some kinds of users, Defender is oftentimes turned off by the users, so its use is probably impossible. What’s more, a wide range of trojan viruses are capable to disable the embedded antivirus. It is much better to use the separated program that will not have such weakness.

When the browsers are reset, you need to make sure that your web browser will be connected the appropriate DNS while connecting to the website you need. Make a text file titled “hosts” on your pc’s desktop, then open it and fill it with the following content3:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Find the hosts.txt file in C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc directory. Rename this file to “hosts.old.txt” (to distinguish it from the new one), and then move the file you created on the desktop to this folder. Remove the hosts.old from this folder. Now you have your hosts file as good as new.

Nonetheless, there is one trouble that makes the things a lot harder to restore, particularly without the anti-malware program. A lot of adware variants that are used to show you the Defence-p pop-up promotions are changing the deep browser configurations, disabling an access to the settings tab. So, if you attempt to fix your browser settings after your system was penetrated by pop-up-related malware, your browser will crash quickly. Sometimes, you will see no crash, but huge lag spike after pushing the “settings” key. Browser will stop reacting for ~ 30 seconds, and then it will be back to the normal, till you attempt to open settings again.
