to get your DOGE!— The note on mentioned website
On that page, you will be told that this charity is powered by Elon Musk, and the Doge giveaway is the way Musk thanks his fans for the Dogecoin purchases. And it is partially a truth – Musk really called to buy Dogecoin through his Twitter account several times. However, he told nothing about the giveaways or any other events which can be even close to that “giveaway”. The Dogecoin scam is not related to Elon Musk, but just exploiting his name.
According to this website, to get your Dogecoins doubled, you need to fill in information about yourself in the form, and then transfer a designated amount of DOGE to the specified wallet. Fraudsters state they will not do any backward payments if the transaction is less than 5000 DOGE (about $230). However, there is no difference if you will send 5000 DOGE or 15000 – you will get nothing.
Besides the financial loss, which is relatively small, you also give the cybercriminals your credentials. Personal data sharing is among the main rules of this “charity” act. After some time, your data will be sold. And no one can say who will get your info – it can be purchased by other cybercriminals, spammers, online retailers, etc. But the fact that your email will be full of unwanted messages or even spam is 100% unwanted.
Malware-related appearance of Dogecoin scam
Different adware variants appear to be a spreading method for this scam. Adware is a type of malware which brings money to its creators by showing the unwanted ads to its victims1. As the virus is successfully injected, it starts opening the musk-in.com page, trying to involve the victim into this fraud. Some viruses don’t open the exact page but show you the pop-up message or banner, where the information is offered. This distribution method is very close to Google membership rewards scam – similar thing where the users are offered to get valuable prizes for a short quiz.
