Safety specialist Tomas Meskauskas was the one who originally brought to light the Worry virus, which belongs with the ransomware type of infection. Ransomware of such sort encrypts all the data on your computer (images, text files, excel tables, audio files, videos, etc) and adds its own extension to every file.

What is known about the Worryvirus?
☝️ A scientifically correct designation for the Worry is “a ransomware malicious agent”.
The renaming will be done by this scheme: .worry. In the process of encryption, a file named, for example, “report.docx” will be changed to “report.docx.id[1e857d00-2994].[email@example.com].worry”.
The ransom note usually contains a description of how to buy the decryption tool from the Worry developers. You can get this decoding tool after contacting firstname.lastname@example.org, email@example.com via email. That is it.
|Detection||Crytex.Virus.FileInfector.DDS, Win32/Filecoder.OLC, Malware-Cryptor.InstallCore.5|
|Symptoms||Your files (photos, videos, documents) have a .worry extension and you can’t open them.|
|Fix Tool||See If Your System Has Been Affected by Worry virus|
The note coming in package with the Worry ransomware states the following:
All your files have been encrypted! All your files have been encrypted due to a security problem with your PC. If you want to restore them, write us to the e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org Write this ID in the title of your message - In case of no answer in 24 hours write us to this e-mail:email@example.com You have to pay for decryption in Bitcoins. The price depends on how fast you write to us. After payment we will send you the tool that will decrypt all your files. Free decryption as guarantee Before paying you can send us up to 5 files for free decryption. The total size of files must be less than 4Mb (non archived), and files should not contain valuable information. (databases,backups, large excel sheets, etc.) How to obtain Bitcoins The easiest way to buy bitcoins is LocalBitcoins site. You have to register, click \'Buy bitcoins\', and select the seller by payment method and price. hxxps://localbitcoins.com/buy_bitcoins Also you can find other places to buy Bitcoins and beginners guide here: hxxp://www.coindesk.com/information/how-can-i-buy-bitcoins/ Attention! Do not rename encrypted files. Do not try to decrypt your data using third party software, it may cause permanent data loss. Decryption of your files with the help of third parties may cause increased price (they add their fee to our) or you can become a victim of a scam.
In the screenshot below, you can see what a directory with files encrypted by the Worry looks like. Each filename has the “.worry” extension appended to it.
How did my machine catch Worry ransomware?
There is a huge number of possible ways of ransomware injection.
There are currently three most popular methods for hackers to have ransomware planted in your system. These are email spam, Trojan injection and peer-to-peer file transfer.
If you access your mailbox and see emails that look like familiar notifications from utility services companies, delivery agencies like FedEx, web-access providers, and whatnot, but whose sender is unknown to you, beware of opening those letters. They are very likely to have a harmful item attached to them. So it is even more dangerous to download any attachments that come with letters like these.
Another option for ransom hunters is a Trojan file model1. A Trojan is a program that gets into your computer disguised as something else. For instance, you download an installer for some program you want or an update for some program. But what is unboxed turns out to be a harmful program that corrupts your data. As the update file can have any name and any icon, you have to make sure that you can trust the resource of the things you’re downloading. The optimal way is to use the software companies’ official websites.
As for the peer-to-peer file transfer protocols like BitTorrent or eMule, the threat is that they are even more trust-based than the rest of the Internet. You can never guess what you download until you get it. Our suggestion is that you use trustworthy websites. Also, it is reasonable to scan the directory containing the downloaded objects with the antivirus as soon as the downloading is finished.
How to remove the Worry virus?
It is important to inform you that besides encrypting your files, the Worry virus will most likely install the Azorult Spyware on your computer to seize your credentials to various accounts (including cryptocurrency wallets). That program can derive your logins and passwords from your browser’s auto-filling cardfile.
Often racketeers would decode several of your files so you know that they really have the decryption tool. As Worry virus is a relatively new ransomware, safety measures designers have not yet found a way to reverse its work. However, the anti-ransomware instruments are constantly updated, so the effective countermeasure may soon be available.
Of course, if the malefactors succeed in encrypting someone’s critical data, the desperate person will probably comply with their demands. Despite that, paying to racketeers does not necessarily mean that you’re getting your blocked information back. It is still risky. After getting the ransom, the racketeers may send a wrong decryption key to the injured party. There were reports about hackers just disappearing after getting the ransom without even bothering to reply.
The optimal countermeasure to ransomware is to have a system restore point or the copies of your critical files in the cloud drive or at least on an external storage. Surely, that might be insufficient. Your most important thing could be that one you were working on when it all started. Nevertheless, it is something. It is also advisable to scan your PC for viruses with the anti-malware utility after the OS is rolled back.
Worry is not the only ransomware of its kind, since there are other specimens of ransomware out there that act in the same manner. Examples of those are Mppn, Uyit, Isza, and some others. The two main differences between them and the Worry are the ransom amount and the method of encryption. The rest is the same: files become encoded, their extensions changed, ransom notes are found in every directory containing encoded files.
Some lucky users were able to decode the blocked files with the aid of the free software provided by anti-malware developers. Sometimes the racketeers mistakenly send the decoding key to the wronged in the ransom note. Such an epic fail allows the victim to restore the files. But obviously, one should never rely on such a chance. Remember, ransomware is a tamperers’ instrument to lay their hands on the money of their victims.
How do I avert ransomware attack?
Worry ransomware has no endless power, neither does any similar malware.
You can armour your system from its injection within several easy steps:
- Never open any emails from unknown senders with strange addresses, or with content that has nothing to do with something you are waiting for (can you win in a money prize draw without even taking part in it?). If the email subject is more or less something you are waiting for, check all elements of the suspicious letter with caution. A fake email will surely have mistakes.
- Never use cracked or untrusted software. Trojans are often distributed as an element of cracked products, possibly under the guise of “patch” which prevents the license check. But potentially dangerous programs are very hard to tell from reliable ones, as trojans sometimes have the functionality you need. You can try to find information about this software product on the anti-malware message boards, but the best solution is not to use such programs at all.
- And to be sure about the safety of the files you downloaded, scan them with GridinSoft Anti-Malware. This program will be a powerful shield for your PC.

Frequently Asked Questions
🤔 Are the “.worry” files accessible?
Unfortunately, no. You need to decipher the “.worry” files first. Then you will be able to open them.
🤔 What should I do to make my files accessible as fast as possible?
If the “.worry” files contain some really important information, then you probably have them backed up. In case you haven’t, there is still a chance that you do have a Restore Point from some time ago to roll back the whole system to the moment when it had no virus yet, but already had your files. There are other ways to beat ransomware, but they take time.
🤔 You have advised using GridinSoft Anti-Malware to get rid of the Worry virus. Does it mean that all my files, currently encrypted, will be removed too?
No way! Your encrypted files are no threat to your PC.
GridinSoft Anti-Malware will remove active infections from your computer. The virus that has infiltrated your computer is must be still active and launching checks from time to time to encrypt any new files you might create on your computer after the initial attack. As it has been mentioned above, the Worry virus comes with the company. It installs backdoors and keyloggers that can take your account passwords by trespass and provide criminals with easy access to your computer after some time.
🤔 What actions should I take if the Worry virus has blocked my computer and I can’t get the activation key.
In such an unfortunate situation, you need to prepare a flash memory card with a previously installed Trojan Killer. Use Safe Mode to perform the cleaning. The point is that the ransomware runs automatically as the system boots and encodes any new files created or brought into your system. To suppress this process – use Safe Mode, which allows only the vital applications to run upon system start. Consider reading our manual on booting Windows in Safe Mode.
🤔 What can I do right now?
Many of the encrypted files might still be within your reach
- If you sent or received your important files through email, you could still download them from your online mail server.
- You may have shared images or videos with your friends or family members. Simply ask them to give those pictures back to you.
- If you have initially got any of your files from the Web, you can try to do it again.
- Your messengers, social networks pages, and cloud drives might have all those files as well.
- Maybe you still have the needed files on your old PC, a laptop, phone, flash memory, etc.
HINT: You can use data recovery programs4 to get your lost data back since ransomware arrests the copies of your files, deleting the authentic ones. In the video below, you can learn how to use PhotoRec for such a recovery, but be advised: you won’t be able to do it before you remove the virus with an antivirus program.
Also, you can contact the following official fraud and scam sites to report this attack:
- In the United States: On Guard Online;
- In Canada: Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre;
- In the United Kingdom: Action Fraud;
- In Australia: SCAMwatch;
- In New Zealand: Consumer Affairs Scams;
- In France: Agence nationale de la sécurité des systèmes d’information;
- In Germany: Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik;
- In Ireland: An Garda Síochána;
To report the attack, you can contact local executive boards. For instance, if you live in USA, you can have a talk with FBI Local field office, IC3 or Secret Service.
