LUUUUUUUUU Virus Ransomware Removal

Written by Brendan Smith
The Luuuuuuuuu virus falls under the Xorist ransomware family. Ransomware of such sort encrypts all user’s data on the PC (images, documents, excel tables, audio files, videos, etc) and appends its extra extension to every file.

What is Luuuuuuuuu virus?

☝️ A strictly correct description for the Luuuuuuuuu is “a Xorist family ransomware infection”.

Luuuuuuuuu will append its specific .lUUUUUUUUU extension to every file’s name. For instance, a file named “photo.jpg” will be renamed to “photo.jpg.lUUUUUUUUU”. In the same manner, the Excel table with the name “table.xlsx” will be altered to “table.xlsx.lUUUUUUUUU”, and so forth.

The ransom note most probably contains instructions on how to purchase the decryption tool from the racketeers. That is it.

How did my machine catch Luuuuuuuuu ransomware?

There are plenty of possible ways of ransomware injection.

Nowadays, there are three most exploited methods for criminals to have ransomware settled in your digital environment. These are email spam, Trojan infiltration and peer-to-peer networks.

If you open your mailbox and see letters that look just like notifications from utility services companies, postal agencies like FedEx, Internet providers, and whatnot, but whose sender is strange to you, beware of opening those letters. They are very likely to have a malicious file attached to them. So it is even riskier to open any attachments that come with letters like these.

Another option for ransom hunters is a Trojan horse model3. A Trojan is a program that gets into your computer disguised as something different. Imagine, you download an installer for some program you need or an update for some service. But what is unpacked turns out to be a harmful program that encrypts your data. Since the update package can have any name and any icon, you have to make sure that you can trust the source of the files you’re downloading. The best way is to trust the software developers’ official websites.

As for the peer-to-peer file transfer protocols like torrent trackers or eMule, the threat is that they are even more trust-based than the rest of the Web. You can never know what you download until you get it. So you’d better be using trustworthy websites. Also, it is a good idea to scan the directory containing the downloaded files with the anti-malware utility as soon as the downloading is finished.

How do I get rid of the Luuuuuuuuu virus?

It is crucial to inform you that besides encrypting your data, the Luuuuuuuuu virus will probably deploy the Azorult Spyware on your machine to get access to credentials to different accounts (including cryptocurrency wallets). That spyware4 can extract your logins and passwords from your browser’s auto-filling data.

Often tamperers would decrypt several of your files so you know that they indeed have the decryption program. Since Luuuuuuuuu virus is a relatively new ransomware, security software designers have not yet found a method to reverse its work. Nevertheless, the decoding instruments are constantly updated, so the effective countermeasure may soon arrive.

Of course, if the hackers succeed in encrypting someone’s critical files, the hopeless person will most likely fulfill their demands. Despite that, paying a ransom gives no guarantee that you’re getting your blocked information back. It is still dangerous. After receiving the money, the racketeers may send a wrong decryption key to the injured party. There were reports of criminals simply disappearing after getting the ransom without even bothering to reply.

The best solution against ransomware is to have aan OS restore point or the copies of your critical files in the cloud drive or at least on an external disk. Surely, that might be insufficient. Your most important thing could be that one you were working upon when it all happened. But at least it is something. It is also reasonable to scan your PC for viruses with the anti-malware utility after the system restoration.

Luuuuuuuuu is not the only ransomware of its kind, since there are other specimens of ransomware out there that act in the same manner. For instance, Zatp, Bowd, Tcvp, and some others. The two basic differences between them and the Luuuuuuuuu are the ransom amount and the encoding method. The rest is the same: documents become blocked, their extensions changed, ransom notes emerge in every folder containing encoded files.

Some fortunate users were able to decode the arrested files with the aid of the free software provided by anti-malware specialists. Sometimes the racketeers accidentally send the decoding code to the victims in the ransom note. Such an extraordinary fail allows the victim to restore the files. But obviously, one should never expect such a chance. Remember, ransomware is a criminals’ technology to pull the money out of their victims.

How do I avert ransomware infiltration?

Luuuuuuuuu ransomware has no superpower, so as any similar malware.

You can defend your PC from ransomware injection in three easy steps:

  • Never open any letters from unknown mailboxes with unknown addresses, or with content that has nothing to do with something you are expecting (how can you win in a lottery without even taking part in it?). In case the email subject is likely something you are waiting for, check all elements of the dubious email carefully. A hoax letter will surely have a mistake.
  • Avoid using cracked or untrusted software. Trojans are often spreaded as an element of cracked software, most likely as a “patch” preventing the license check. Understandably, untrusted programs are difficult to tell from reliable software, because trojans sometimes have the functionality you need. Try searching for information on this program on the anti-malware message boards, but the optimal way is not to use such software.
  • And finally, to be sure about the safety of the objects you downloaded, use GridinSoft Anti-Malware. This program will be a perfect defense for your system.

FAQ

🤔 How can I open “.lUUUUUUUUU” files? Can I somehow access “.lUUUUUUUUU” files?

There’s no way to do it, unless the files “.lUUUUUUUUU” files are decrypted.

🤔 I really need to decrypt those “.lUUUUUUUUU” files ASAP. How can I do that?

It’s good if you have fаr-sightedly saved copies of these important files elsewhere. In case you haven’t, there is still a chance that you do have a Restore Point from some time ago to roll back the whole system to the moment when it had no virus yet, but already had your files. The rest of the methods require patience.

🤔 You have advised using GridinSoft Anti-Malware to get rid of the Luuuuuuuuu virus. Does it mean that all my files, currently encrypted, will be removed too?

Absolutely not! Unlike the ransomware program itself, the encrypted files do not jeopardize your system.

GridinSoft Anti-Malware will delete the threats from your computer. The malware that has infiltrated your computer is probably still active and launching checks periodically to encrypt any new files you might create on your computer after the initial attack. As it has already been said, the Luuuuuuuuu malware does not come alone. It installs backdoors and keyloggers that can steal your account credentials and provide malefactors with easy access to your computer after some time.

🤔 What should I do if the Luuuuuuuuu ransomware has blocked my PC and I can’t get the activation code.

If that happened, you need to have a memory stick with a previously installed Trojan Killer. Use Safe Mode to do the cleaning. The point is that the ransomware runs automatically as the system boots and encrypts any new files created or imported into your computer. To block this process – use Safe Mode, which allows only the essential applications to run upon system boot. Consider reading our manual on running Windows in Safe Mode.

🤔 What could help the situation right now?

Many of the blocked files might still be at your disposal

  • If you sent or received your important files through email, you could still download them from your online mail server.
  • You might have shared photographs or videos with your friends or family members. Simply ask them to give those pictures back to you.
  • If you have initially got any of your files from the Internet, you can try to do it again.
  • Your messengers, social media pages, and cloud drives might have all those files as well.
  • Maybe you still have the needed files on your old computer, a notebook, cellphone, flash memory, etc.

USEFUL TIP: You can employ file recovery programs7 to retrieve your lost information since ransomware encodes the copies of your files, deleting the original ones. In the video below, you can see how to recover your files with PhotoRec, but remember: you can do it only after you kill the ransomware itself with an anti-malware program.

Also, you can contact the following official fraud and scam sites to report this attack:

To report the attack, you can contact local executive boards. For instance, if you live in USA, you can have a talk with FBI Local field office, IC3 or Secret Service.
